EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR SEARCH

The Burton K. Wheeler Center is a non-partisan non-profit organization, affiliated with Montana State University and located in Wilson Hall. Committed to the idea that enlightened discussion of public policy is the cornerstone of our democracy, the Center has served the state of Montana for thirty-five years as a leader in advancing public discourse, building civic engagement, and addressing issues critical to Montanans. 

The Center is now seeking an Executive Director who will lead the organization in planning and conducting a variety of conferences, lectures, and other programs that promote diverse perspectives and provide for robust exploration of issues important to our state and region. 

The ideal applicant will: 

The successful applicant will start on a part-time basis and be provided flexibility in scheduling his/her work hours, especially centered around the academic calendar when most programs are held. The incoming Executive Director will be expected to lead the efforts to advance the organization to the next level of growth and service to Montana. 

Deadline: July 3, 2025 

Ideal Start Date: September 1, 2025 

Salary: $10,000 annually

INTERN SEARCH FOR FALL 2025 SEMESTER

The Burton K. Wheeler Center is hiring a summer intern and fall semester intern, recruited and competitively selected from across Colleges and Departments on the MSU campus. Housed at MSU, the Burton K. Wheeler Center works to assert, as Senator Wheeler did, that enlightened discussion of public policy is the cornerstone of our democracy through conferences, lectures, research, and events. 

Interns should be motivated to support the fulfilling mission of the organization and have a general interest in public policy, Montana politics and history, or current Wheeler Center programming. Interns will be involved in supporting upcoming projects, events, and current campaigns. 

Intern Responsibilities May Include:
Programming
-Content planning
-High profile speaker/panelist communication
-Event logistics & marketing
-Policy or issue research and writing 
Center Operations
-Updating website and social media 
-Communications and marketing
-Fundraising and development
-Board and committee coordination
-Records and data management
Politics & Pizza events
-Lead event planning serving students at MSU 
Tasks assigned by the Executive Director, Program/Administrative Assistant, or Student Fellow to serve the mission.
Ideal Intern Expectations: 
-Undergraduate or graduate student (preferably with 30 or more credits earned)Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
-Proficiency or willingness to learn Facebook, Instagram, WordPress, Canva, MSU systems, etc. 
-Graphic design experience is a plus.
-Ability to multitask.
-Ability to self-direct and ask for help.Interest in public policy.
-Work approximately 5-10 hours/week
-Fall Internship: the intern should be local to MSU campus for events and weekly meetings.
