The Burton K. Wheeler Center for Public Policy seeks an exceptional leader to serve as its next Chief Executive Officer.

For more than 34 years, the Wheeler Center has brought together citizens, policymakers, educators, business leaders, and community members to explore Montana’s most important public policy issues through informed dialogue in nonpartisan settings. Guided by an ambitious strategic plan, a strong financial position, and a committed Board of Directors, the Center is entering an exciting new chapter.

About the Role

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the CEO will provide strategic, financial, and operational leadership while serving as the Center’s chief ambassador throughout Montana.

The successful candidate will:

• Lead implementation of the Center’s strategic vision.
• Expand the Center’s statewide reach and impact.
• Foster thoughtful civic dialogue around issues important to Montana’s future.
• Build strategic partnerships across government, higher education, philanthropy, business, and communities throughout the state.
• Strengthen the Center’s long-term organizational and financial sustainability.

We’re Looking For Someone Who…

• Has a passion for public policy, possesses intellectual curiosity, is committed to civic engagement and can uphold a rigorously nonpartisan organizational identity. 
• Can build trust and engagement across political, geographic, and cultural perspectives.
• Is equally comfortable in a legislative hearing, a university classroom, a rural community meeting, a donor conversation, the boardroom or a statewide public forum.
• Has demonstrated success strengthening organizations, developing people and financial resources, building partnerships, and translating vision into meaningful results.
• Has experience with organizational budgeting, financial stewardship, and resource allocation.
• Brings the judgment, initiative, and collaborative leadership needed to guide the Center through its next stage of growth.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred.
• Significant organizational leadership experience.
• Demonstrated success in fundraising, organizational leadership, and stakeholder engagement.
• Ability to work effectively across sectors, including higher education, government, philanthropy, business, and nonprofit organizations. 
• Montana residency.

Compensation

• Anticipated Salary Range: $100,000–$120,000, depending on qualifications.
• Negotiated benefits package.
• Hybrid position based in Montana with regular time in the Bozeman office, statewide travel and limited out-of-state travel.
• This is a full-time exempt position, however the Wheeler Center Board will consider candidates interested in .75 up to 1 FTE.
