Program/Administrative Assistant Job Search

The Burton K. Wheeler Center is a non-partisan nonprofit organization, located on Montana State University’s campus. Committed to the idea that enlightened discussion of public policy is the cornerstone of our democracy, the Center has served the state of Montana for thirty-five years as a leader in advancing public discourse, building civic engagement, and addressing issues critical to Montanans.

The Center is now seeking an Program/Administrative Assistant who will support the planning and coordinating of a variety of conferences, lectures, and work that promote a robust exploration of issues important to our state and region. The following are some tasks that could be assigned to this position:

-Support program and event logistics
-Assist with office procedures and policies
-Coordinate budget and accounting functions with bookkeeper
-Process incoming mail, email and phone messages
-Prepare materials for meetings and events
-Website maintenance
-Support interns and fellows
-Manage emails and correspondence
-Schedule appointments, meetings, and travel
-File and organize documents (digital and physical)
-Manage office supplies and place orders when needed
-Collaborate with bookkeeper
-Attend board meetings and Wheeler Center events
-Take meeting minutes
-Work with Interim Executive Director and Board of Directors to uphold mission

Part-time flexible schedule 10-20hrs/week
Compensation is based on experience and competitive with similar positions in the local area.

Intern Opportunity for Summer 2026

The Burton K. Wheeler Center is hiring two summer intern positions, recruited and competitively selected from MSU or other universities across the country. Housed at MSU, the Burton K. Wheeler Center works to assert, as Senator Wheeler did, that enlightened discussion of public policy is the cornerstone of our democracy through conferences, lectures, research, and events. 

Interns should be motivated to support the fulfilling mission of the organization and have a general interest in public policy, Montana politics and history, or current Wheeler Center programming. Interns will be involved in supporting upcoming projects, events, and current campaigns. 

Intern Responsibilities May Include:
Programming
-Content planning
-High profile speaker/panelist communication
-Event logistics & marketing
-Policy or issue research and writing 
Center Operations
-Updating website and social media 
-Communications and marketing
-Fundraising and development
-Board and committee coordination
-Records and data management
Politics & Pizza events
-Lead event planning serving students at MSU 
Tasks assigned by the Executive Director, Program/Administrative Assistant, or Student Fellow to serve the mission.
Ideal Intern Expectations: 
-Undergraduate or graduate student (preferably with 30 or more credits earned)
-Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
-Proficiency or willingness to learn Facebook, Instagram, WordPress, Canva, MSU systems, etc. 
-Graphic design experience is a plus.
-Ability to multitask.
-Ability to self-direct and ask for help.Interest in public policy.
-Work approximately 5-10 hours/week
-Ideally located near Bozeman, Montana
